Diamond appraisal or diamond valuation means estimating the economic value of a diamond in terms of currency. Diamond appraisal should be done by reputed firms who are authorised to issue a certificate and who also know the current market value of the appraised product.
One should not confuse a diamond appraisal report with a diamond grading report. A diamond grading report decribes the properties of the diamonds like weight, dimensions, colour, cut , clarity and lots more. It does not mention anywhere the price of the diamond. Where as the diamond appraisal report does not mention the physical properties in details except for the main ones like carat, clarity, and colour. It only estimates the value of the diamond.
Appraisal is mainly used for insurance purpose. One should be careful that if one needs a appraisal for selling the product then the appraisal holds no value and should not be relied upon completely. The main reason for this being the appraised value is most of the times the end value (including all the costs, expenses and profits/margins involved in getting the product to the customer). This 'end value' is not attainable by the customer while selling for obvious reasons.
